In 1915, he wrote his first literary-weak, according to Maxim Gorky, story. The teacher forgot about literature for 13 years. For two years he was in charge of the railway school at the carriage workshops in Kryukov. In 1919 he began to live in Poltava. Near Poltava, the writer founded a labor colony for juvenile delinquents. This colony was named after M. Gorky. Makarenko became a famous figure of Russian and world culture and pedagogy due to his outstanding success in raising children and adapting them to later life in society.

He turned to literature again, writing "March 30 years" in 1932. For ten years, work continued on Makarenko's most important work, The Pedagogical Poem. Two years before his death, the writer moved to the capital of Russia, where he worked on the autobiographical works "Honor" and "The Ways of Generation". He did not have time to finish the last novel.

He was married to Galina Stepanovna Salko, raised his brother's daughter and adopted son.

On April 1, 1939, he went on the last journey in his life, the writer died on the train at the Golitsyno stop.
