She is a 380-footer with 6.700 tons submerged displacement. She has vertical tubes for firing Polaris missiles and she can fire them from underwater or from the surface. She is also ar med with a torpedo-firing system for attacking surface ships or enemy submarines.

The Ministry of Defense stated that another nuclear powe red submarine for the Royal Navy would be ordered from Vickers-Armstrongs Ltd. She is Valiant.

Laid down: Jan. 1962.
Displacement: 3.500 tons. Dimensions: 266—33—27 feet. Tubes: 21-inch homing.
Complement: 88 (11 officers and 77 ratings).
The Admiralty states that HMS Valiant will be equipped to hunt and kill enemy submarines and surface warships, and she will also be designed to carry an asdic that can detect at grea ter ranges than British conventional submarines.
She will not carry ballistic missiles and cannot be conver ted to do so, as ballistic missile submarines are of a different size and design.

This ship was built as a «target» for antisubmarine vessels.

THE LOSS OF THE THRESHER
On April 10, 1963 the world witnessed one of the greatest catastrophies — the tragic loss of the US nuclear-powered sub marine Thresher. It happened in the Atlantic ocean, 220 miles eastward of Boston.
The crew consisting of 129 officers, men and civilians pe rished on board the submarine.
On the day of its loss the Thresher, accompanied by her rescue vessel Skylark, put to sea for deep submerging to test her new equipment and armament. There was only one radio communication with her before submerging. Then the communi.- cation cut short.
One can suppose that the catastrophy came about quite suddenly. The ocean depth at that place was about 2800 m.
The searching aircraft and vessels found only some oil spots, fragments of cork and rubber gloves in that area. Trying to find the causes of the catastrophy, the experts suppose that there was a sudden leakage and a serious damage to the hull. All this was the result of serious defects in her design.
Only after the catastrophy it became known about those defects which had been found during the trials. Yet the US Navy Department considered the results of the trials quite satisfactory, and the submarine was commissioned in autumn
1961.
It is no surprise that the members of the crew called the Thresher «the floating coffin».
