MINE WARFARE VESSELS
Mine warfare vessels are designe'd for special type of war fare. These vessels consist of two types: minesweepers and mi nelayers. (Minesweepers are also called sweepers).
Minelayers usually lay mines or mine fields to block chan
nels or |
to protect harbours. The |
Navy uses |
three |
kinds of |

ships to |
lay mines: small, shallow-draft ships |

inshore; |
medium-draft, powerful, |

minelayers |
that |
rush in, lay and retire at maximum speed; larger ships with space for many mines to lay mine fields.
Minelaying off the enemy coast at a distance can be done by submarines, aircraft, desrtoyers and other ships.
Minesweepers clear areas and channels in which the enemy has laid mines. They are of about 800 tons, carry two 4-inch and antiaircraft (AA) guns and develop speed about 16 knots. Their role is very important.
Minesweepers are divided into coastal inshore and ocean minelayers and minesweepers. Numerous wooden-hulled mine vessels have been built in recent years. Typical of these is the ocean 172-foot sweeper with 4 diesel engines.

MINESWEEPERS
Their principal armament is sweeps by means of which they sweep the mines laid by the enemy in the coastal waters and in the open sea.
The sweeps are of contact and non-contact type. The mi nesweepers operate in groups and must be protected at sea by escort vessels and in the air — by aircraft. The minesweepers provide safe cruising of different ships and vessels.
Their displacement is 270—900 tons, length 41—67 metres, beam 7—11 metres; draught 2—4 metres; speed 15—22 knots.

Heavy naval guns are’placed in turrets. British ships mount from 2 to 4 guns in a turret. Two guns in one turret are called twins (or twin mount), three guns — triple, four guns--quad ruple. A turret is protected with armour and is large enough to contain guns with gunners. Turrets can rotate horizontally.
Naval guns are divided into main battery, secondary battery and dual-purpose guns. The main battery is the offensive arma ment consisting of 12, 14 or 16-in guns mounted on the main deck in twin or triple turrets. The secondary armament and A. A. guns are defensive in character and are used to protect the ship from torpedoes and aircraft.
